Sorry for replying to my own post. I tried to investigate a bit further. celestia 1.3.1 runs stable and does not crash at all (except when quitting, which has been described before elsewhere and doesn't bother me too much). What is annoying, however, is that the bookmarks don't work at all on my sys...

No it is not the binary of the SuSE distro. If you compile celestia 1.3.1 yourself under SuSE 9.1, the bookmarks still don't work.
