Sounds good :D
Just to let you guys know that ftp.dasmirnov.net will be closing down in a day or two. Seems kinda pointless keeping it running (and killing my DSL connection) when we've got some fat pipes with better textures then what I've got. :)

Re: Download Large DDS textures here
Hey guys. Just to let you know about the server, the files aren't corrupt locally, so keep trying. The server is up and down all over the place at the moment, I do have other services web and mail both running over the same line an FTP is ranked lowest on things that need to work. The server general...

Jeeez I'm trying to play Quake III Arena, I wonder why I am lagging like hell, roll on over to the server and wow, look at all these people connected to my FTP server... :) My server is up 24hours a day, obviously though if it's full usually a web browser will just bang up some old page not saying m...

Naming ideas
Celestia_<type>_<object>_<resolution>_<filetype>.zip For example 'Celestia_texture_earthnight_8kx6k_dds.zip' A bit long but pretty much says exactly what you're downloading before you do. I've thought about having the author in the filename, but for finding files think it would be best just to inclu...

Re: New Graphics Card!
I completely agree with Redfish about the GeForce 4 MXs, they both suck and blow, and they can't even do that any good. If you wanna buy a repackaged GeForce 2, get an GeForce 4 MX, you want something remotely modern go ATi Radeon 9700! This GeForce 3, will be the last nVidia card of mine, there's n...

The Voodoo cards from 1-3 couldn't draw textures larger then 256x256, it had to cut them down first, obviously losing quality.

Re: Slightly OT: Gorgeous Sunspot group
Where abouts are you Malcolm? I'm in Yeovil, Somerset. Was quite good observing last night until the cloud very rapidly rolled in, around 23:10 if memory serves me. Saw 4 satellites, 1 was in the region of Lyra, which was only visible through my scope, fluke or what it happened to be pointing the ri...

Slightly OT: Gorgeous Sunspot group
Would of posted this a bit sooner, but couldn't access the site for the last 24 hours! Anyway to all you *real* astronomers out there you might want to check out a massive sunspot group in the southern hemisphere, today is probably the last day if you're going to do so before they drift too far west...

Re: Question for the future
It would be a nice feature, to have gravity physics written 100% realistically so Celestia could accurately model the universe. Writing a ultra realistic physics engine certainly is a lot of work. But then plotting in the orbits for every known object in the universe, that's kinda a hell of a lot mo...

Re: Europa at 8k !
Why don't you get your mate to host an FTP server on his ADSL, and then let him have 27000 connection requests made every 12 hours for a week and shifting 2GB of files per day, and see how fast his server goes then? May be then you'll understand why things are going so slow at my end. If the server ...

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is quite a good album for Celestia, Kid A and may be OK Computer. The Fragile makes things pretty interesting. May be the Star Trek theme? :-) the First Contact one yeah that's pretty good.

Re: Highest res Earth texture?
Might want to try this one out:
ftp://ftp.dasmirnov.net/astronomy/celes ... 6k_dds.zip
Very sharp until you start getting below 1000Kms, still looks good down to about 400Kms though.

Re: Could someone please fix those corrupted archives?
The server is located in my cupboard which is in the UK. Hooked up over an ADSL line. I've checked the files before and they're not corrupted and just checked them again. The server was heavily bogged down 2 or so weeks ago, which I suppose made an error during transit more likely, but it's been pre...

Re: Celestia on an older PC
Looks like a new motherboard then too! I good price/performance system would be something like: AMD Athlon XP 1800+ Abit KR7A-RAID mobo 512MB of DDR SDRAM GeForce 3 Ti 200 or GeForce 4 Ti xxxx (as budget allows, but no GF2, or GF4MX cards). And the rest as needed. Should cost around ?480-?500 tops.

Hey Pixel and guys.
If you log on as "celestia" with "uploads" as your passwords. You'll have the 64Kb/s upload speed. And 24Kb/s download speed.
I just don't want annoymous people with access to all my bandwidth. :-) Incase over night it turns into a porn server or something.
