Re: Please take 5 minutes to benchmark your machine...
Hi Boux, Not sure if your setup is represented in the Passmark benchmarks. The website: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html lists the following (in decreasing order of performance): Radeon HD 4870 Radeon HD4870 X2 Radeon HD 4870 X2 ASUS EAH4870x2 Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 Mobility...

Re: Please take 5 minutes to benchmark your machine...
Quick and dirty benchmarking: - Vista 64 (too lazy to reboot to Win7) - 1920x1080 - no AA --> 112 fps - x8 MS --> 106 fps As expected, I am clearly CPU limited on this old machine. I have yet to see an application (read: a game) which would be able to saturate this xFire set-up though... Specs are i...

Re: infinite mouse feature for Celestia Qt4
Bonsoir Vincent, Celestia-qt builds and runs OK after applying your patch (Vista 64). Great functionality indeed... I am just wondering about the huge gap that is increasing between latest SVN code/content and the -very- old public 1.6 release ... and I am not talking about the Qt version only... I ...

yes, this is correct, OS is Windows Vista 64.
IDE is VC Express 2008 and QT environment is 4.5.3.
I guess this is all about the black art of programming, hehe, making an improvement or killing one bug somewhere will just make a new bug pop up elsewhere...

Bug Qt-celestia SVN 5142
Hi all, Following some recent changes to the QT version source code, qt-celestia will no longer build (SVN 5137-->5142). The compiler outputs an error that points to line 162 of qtappwin.ccp. Changing CONFIG_DATA_DIR to a QString like this: QString celestia_data_dir = "CONFIG_DATA_DIR"; se...

Re: Celestia now only works in 256 colors
ozzyoscy, looks like you are trying to run Celestia with a directX opengl wrapper. This is not going to work. Celestia rendering engine will not be able to initialize properly and will throw the pixel format error you are seeing. I guess there is an opengl32.dll in your Celestia directory. Please de...

OK, enough experimentation for the time being and let's go for more eye candy with our pocket Hubble toy: Galactic center "the image" How do you get this milkyway model? 8O It is a personal add-on that I created for my own purpose. As it may - or may not - contain copyrighted material tha...

The attached zip contains an SVN 5050 celestia-qt4 build with its associated dlls.
Just drop all the files in your Celestia installation directory.

Re: Multiple light sources with multiple shadows crashes
I just gave it a go (build 5050). - native Win32 --> instant crash - Win Qt4 --> no crash Possible suspect(s): Windows OpenGL Api and/or bug in Celestia code Qt uses its own QtOpenGL4.dll interface which may explain why it is not crashing. Selden I believe you are running an Nvidia graphic card. I a...

Re: Drawing a better star
I found something interesting running the MSI Afterburner monitoring tool. The test has been done at the location Chris was using (9 light years from earth, stars rendering only, 45 FOV). Here is the graph: http://www.quickfixcomm.com/Celestia/monitoring_lim-mag_0.89to15.09.png You can see that GPU ...

Re: Drawing a better star
For what it's worth, here is what I am finding here: - Qt4 build 5043, EXT_framebuffer_sRGB extension supported Without patch: - Start-up screen, automag on --> 149 fps - Center on alpha Crux, automag on --> 193 fps - Center on alpha Crux, automag off, limitig magnitude 12 --> 150 fps With patch: - ...

Re: Drawing a better star
Chris,
I must be dumb or very tired or both
I messed up two directories with screenshot sets from various tests.
I have uploaded again all the images for my 2 previous posts.
Look at the new series from bare eyes to zooms into the galactic plane.
Limiting magnitude at work.
What was I thinking???

Re: Drawing a better star
As a reference to t00fri's post re alpha cent picture... Some not so bad shots... Celestia's sensor is doing pretty well and does not leak light  Done with brightnessBias(0.65f) EDIT Aug 12 --> brightnessBias back to (0.0f) What is weird is that there are more visible differences between fuzzy...

Re: Drawing a better star
I have been playing with Chris's code (big thanks for sharing!). The new star rendering is very nice and can be gorgeous with some tweaking. First, I have got rid of the 1 Ly solar system size limit so that the transition between shader and mesh rendering is smooth. Then I have been playing with the...

Re: Brightness of the moon
It happens here too when starstyle is set to fuzzy or scaled disc rendering. It does not happen if starstyle is set to point - which is my favorite setting as I find the stars are way too intrusive and not realistic at all with the two other settings. It looks like Chris is currently working out a b...

Re: FOV=180 degrees?
Unfortunately this is one of several variables that are hard-coded in Celestia when they should be available either in the config file or way better, as an user choice in some yet to come "System Options" menu. In the meantime, just go to line 77 of celestiacore.ccp source file, change the...

You can change the version string that shows up in Win32 splash screen and Win32 and Qt4 help/about menus there: Win32: E:\SVN\celestia\src\celestia\win32\res\resource.h Qt4: E:\SVN\celestia\src\celestia\qt\qtappwin.ccp Additionally, to see the embedded version string in properties (when right-click...
