Re: Celestia discovers Newton!

Hahaha... well pointed out... I liked the way you put it. You are right, Orbitersim is definitely intended for another kind of users, who may share or not their interest with Celestia. Orbitersim is just an extreme example, and I don't think anyone would like them to merge. But even when gravitation...

Re: Celestia discovers Newton!

The solution you point out looks good. if you want seamless navigation, the gravitational model can be plugged into the trajectory calculator as an option for certain scenarios, so you really wouldn't notice which engine is on. The only major setback is this trip is one way only... For instance, jum...

Re: Celestia discovers Newton!

Random access time: the ability to specify a given date to start the simulation. You can skip there through usual Kepler to get the dynamical vectors and start from that point on using the heavier gravitational engine. ?Time frame? For virtually all other than artificial satellites, one day is fair ...

Re: Celestia discovers Newton!

The gravitational model has had a place in many space simulators for years. Highly successful Orbitersim is entirely based on a gravitational model. The funny thing is that they refuse the OpenGL part which is central to Celestia, while Celestia refuses the gravitational model absolutely critical to...

Re: Celestia discovers Newton!

Thank you about dropping the sticky thing. I didn't mean to check it. But don't drop the gravitational bit so fast!! We all are quite aware of the increased computational time, it's something we understand, but by no means make them unafordable for modern processors. Using a simple square matrix for...

An interview with Chris Laurel

Hey, last summer I sent a small questionnaire to Chris Laurel on Celestia, and he was kind enough to answer it real soon. For the moment, I have only posted the Spanish version of this interview into my personal blog at http://aerialphenomena.blogspot.com/2008/10/detrs-de-celestia.html . I plan to p...

Celestia discovers Newton!

Kepler is Ok, but when you need high precision, you can not confine yourself to the usual True Anomaly based calculations, especially with high eccentric orbits, namely many comets or small bodies. I just played a bit with http://www.astrograv.co.uk/ , a nice commercial product, but I do not see wh...

Thanks so much, Danial. Works like I wanted to.

I found, though, that in Spanish version it's Shift + :.

How to keep an eye on a planet while following another

What is the right combination of Follow, Track, Synchronize commands in order to keep a sight line from one planet into another? For instance, following the Eearth and keeping the Sun in the same relative position on the screen? or following a comet while keeping an eye on the Earth? Many thanks, Di...

Sorry, Frank!

And, yes, I have listed a couple of wiki celestia sites. Some look really interesting, but you still need to login separately.

WIKI CELESTIA

Really, forums are not the best way to gather and keep organized large amounts of information on any particular subject, like a knowledge base. They are great for debate and informal knowledge transmission. What on manuals? oh... Everybody loves them, but no one has time to read or keep them updated...

Select, Go to, Follow, Sync, Track, Trace, how do they work?

I'd like to be able to anticipate what's the effect of applying the navigation controls to the objects I see. Common tasks, as keeping an eye on the moon while on Earth, or on Saturn while riding Cassini spacecraft, should be easier to do. Clearer description or wizards welcome. The affected command...

ESA USES CELESTIA - ESA OFICIAL REPLY RECEIVED

Well, this is the official reply I've just received from ESA regarding the use of Celestia on their website. It's a kind one, and I'm very pleased to copy to you all. "Dear Sr Rodriguez Thank you for your kind words and interesting note. You are right, we did make a small oversight, which we have no...

ESA uses Celestia

Guys, I've just contacted ESA looking for an old mate. They replied me yesterday. I suggest we all address an e-mail to contactEsa@esa.int to get some credit from them on the work of Chris Laurel and his fellow developpers at Celestia. As an example, I've sent them the following lines: Sirs, "Celest...

Re: OpenUniverse

Anyways i'm more than happy with Celestia and Orbiter. Maybe one day these two killer apps will merge  Yes, and there's also a thing called Eagle Lander 3D from Ron Monsen focusing on a very accurate simulation of the last feet on Apollo XII landing. But he doesn't feel like joining efforts w...

Re: Lite version of Celestia in a Java applet --> HERE

The applet looks nice. But I dont see the need of the orbits diagram and the data table at the bottom of the page. And on the translation thing, you probably did not want to spread it around the globe, so you can do whatever you want on it.

Re: Spaceflight bug concerning arrow keys

People who want a flight model should probably try Orbiter: http://www.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/~martins/orbit/orbit.html It doesn't have interstellar flight, but it's lots of fun all the same. I followed that link and found a awesome astronautics simulator, unfortunately on the DirectX domain. I agree us...

Re: New concept - surface scan

Yes, wavelet seems like a key technology to boast Celestia into an spectacular entertainer for all to enjoy. But that sounds like a well defined pro's and con's competition between GPL wavelet compressors and licenced ones. Let me summarize what has been told so far: - EZW and ECW Ermapper (defended...
