Re: 1.3.2 Pre 10 - CPU Usage

Chris: Thanks, that sounds great! I understand about the rendering changes and not wanting to impact the impending release of 1.3.2... will look forward to this in another release. BTW, I've seen a lot of shareware and open source... and Celestia is among the best software, including commercial, I'v...

Re: about specular maps

Try Ctrl-V to change the rendering mode. I don't think specular works in Basic mode... may require one of the OpenGL or FX modes (if you have an NVidia graphics card).

Specular gives, i.e. a shiny reflection off the surface of Earth from the Sun.

Re: 1.3.2 Pre 10 - CPU Usage

Selden: Thx. I see bringing up a menu does stop cpu usage... at least a quick trick (but then you can't zoom in etc.). I just noticed something else though: When you minimize Celestia, cpu usage shoots up to 99%. Just start it up using the default "normal" earth texture... in task manager, I get aro...

Re: 1.3.2 Pre 10 - CPU Usage

maxim: Thanks. It'd be much better if the updates could be stopped when time is frozen, so you could just idle Celestia. For example, often I'll stop time and just zoom in, stop, zoom in to study a texture. And, I'll often want to switch to something else for a while. I'm a relatively new user -- a ...

1.3.2 Pre 10 - CPU Usage

1. Using the default earth surface, and all rendering options off except planets, and Time static (i.e. frozen or by pressing 'K'). Home in on earth (i.e. Egypt) while watching CPU usage in Task Manager. Around 8,000 km, CPU usage jumps from around 20 to the upper 90's. Move in closer, to around 6,0...

Re: 64k Blue Marble

Selden: thx for the link. I still have a few questions: 1) Should we have have mipmaps in the dxt1c's we convert to from Jestr's jpg's? If nomipmaps is used, the files are a little smaller. And, I see Harald Schmidt's excellent DDS's don't have them. 2) What to convert the JestrNormal to? dxt1c? 3) ...

Re: 64k Blue Marble

Dave: I converted to dxt1's. When I switch with the jpg alternate while staring at the screen, I can't detect any change at all. (I have a GeForce FX Go 5650 in case the card is of relevance.)

Re: 64k Blue Marble

I also converted to dds using the nvdxt tool (after 1st changing to tga). The nvdxt tool seems buggy. When you use argument -24 or -32 with dxt1c or dxt3 (i.e. -24 dxt1c or -24 -dxt1c) it states unknown format, using dxt1 (and yet converts to dxt3). So, -24 and -32 don't work. Anyway, I managed to c...

Anonymous Guest, There is no reason not to compile programs in Windows. And that free of charge. The Cygwin Linux Layer http://www.cygwin.com Bye Fridger Fridger: I also don't understand why a compiled version of your tool can't be provided. Some of us aren't Unixites... I have to use a little at w...

Re: Texture frustration

John: I think I dl'd the bad MarsLevel4's (using a T1 not dialup) from the Celestia Motherlode site. Maybe they're ok on your http://johnscelestiapage.no-ip.com/VirtualTextures/filemgmt/viewcat.php?cid=11 site? I'll try from there again this week and let you know. And thanks... what I did dl (levels...

Re: Texture frustration

John V: Sorry if it came across that I was criticizing you. I appreciate your effort. Tonight I had access to a T1 and, from the motherlode, downloaded and successfully unzipped all your MarsNormalLevel's, and MarsLevel_0_1_2 and MarsLevel3. However, I dl'd the MarsLevel4's several times, and was un...

Texture frustration

Hi everyone. I'm a new Celestial user... been playing around with it for about a week. It's a great discovery and I commend all who've contributed to its success! So, take what I have to say below with a grain of salt (and yes, I recognize I haven't contributed) ;) Like most new users, I want a bunc...
