Re: 1.4.1 behaves weirdly after compilation from source
correct, I switched the grid on manually. The controls all work fine, you see, and I switched on as many features as possible to see what would be displayed before I submitted this. But I will check if there were any leftovers from previous installations now, hang on... I suppose it must have someth...

1.4.1 behaves weirdly after compilation from source
I just downloaded and compiled Celestia 1.4.1, --with-kde, on Debian. Compilation went smoothly, and Celestia starts up with splash screen and all. However, its behaviour is passing strange. The objects "are" not where they are displayed. I see constellation boundaries, orbits and labels (planets, s...

Re: broken package? / compiling from source
thanks - well, maybe it's a distribution-related problem: debian has liblua50, liblua50-dev, lua50 -- but lua50-dev is conspiciously absent. I'll try to get hold of that file somewhere else (but I must not tinker with celestia too much while I should be working :? ) http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bi...

Re: Mostly Harmless 0.3.0
I imagine this MySQL backend would have many uses, not just for the game, but also for "serious" star-browsing. Has it been considered to merge it into the official code of celestia (maybe, as an option at compile-time)? I would really love to be able to run mysql-queries even with 'normal' celestia!

broken package? / compiling from source
I was happily running celestia on debian linux, until recently, installing the 1.3.0 package: celestia: error while loading shared libraries: liblualib.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I have installed liblua4 and liblua5, but I cannot find a file called liblualib.so. So...

Re: 1.3.1 prerelease 11
I can hardly believe how much celestia has improved since I last updated! I mean -- it seemed perfect even then. accoring to the changelog, axis precession I was bitching about in the past was added 1.2.4. eclipses and comet tails are spectacular. why, we have *light time delay*, for chrissake! alth...

Re: earth orbit accuracy
hello again -- in case anyone is still interested in the fate of old king Henry, I have found this site in the meantime: http://www.phenomena.org.uk/CentralSolar.htm they putatively identify `my' eclipse with the one of Aug 2nd, 1133 (so the chronicle entry would be 1.5 years off) maybe next time I ...

Re: earth orbit accuracy
Just because ther is "no exact [analytic] solution" does not mean that we do not have an extremely accurate model of planetary orbits. so it seems. i'm impressed. although i would be even more impressed if they would give error margins for their eclipse data. i am well aware of the extreme accuracy...

Re: earth orbit accuracy
hmmm - since you mention Xerxes' eclipse, I had a look at it, and celestia seems to be about 5 hours 'late': instead of 11:30, the maximum is around 16:30, and thus over the atlantic instead of over africa as on the map you linked; this is 1.2.4 now, and I wonder if you see this eclipse over africa ...

Re: earth orbit accuracy
well, I must say, this is a sobering experience as far the reliability of the anglo-saxon chronicle is concerned... the eclipse seems to be some sort of literary topos inserted to make the king's death a bit more dramatic. still, it strikes me that the eclipse should be inserted at a 'correct' date,...

earth orbit accuracy
I have discovered a passage in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle (Project Gutenberg text #657) that describes a solar eclipse: A.D. 1135. In this year went the King Henry over sea at the Lammas; and the next day, as he lay asleep on ship, the day darkened over all lands, and the sun was all as it were a thr...

Re: Quaoar, anyone?
I think you mean Roman gods. excepting Uranus, well, yes. although they are all pretty much ripped off copies of their greek counterparts. Of course, in greek, MVTMJSUNP will become HAGAZKUPH. But with the Los Angeles County Indians, I don't know, maybe XQQZQYZYQQ? as one slashdot poster put it: TH...

so they finally discover transpluto, and then they go on and name it ...Quaoar? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/2306945.stm Quaoar gives only one google hit just now (but I figure this will change quickly): http://www.angelfire.com/journal/cathbodua/Gods/Qgods.html this seems to be some database...

pico
this is totally offtopic, but since pico was mentioned -- I love the program, I use it every day, I can undo the stupid linewraps in my sleep (and vi is just for die hard Real Programmers) but: why does it freeze when I press ctrl-s ?? I mean, this behaviour has not gone away over several versions. ...

cloud snapshots
for those interested, i am starting this collection of cloud snapshots form the xplanet site now. you can access it here: http://flaez.ch/clouds/ i am not sure if i will continue this (since it will take considerable space over time...). maybe i'll cut down to 1 image per day or downsize the images....

Re: Real Time Earth
can someone tell me how to format earth-clouds.png? the polar regions seem to be cut off, and does size matter? for 'real time earth' we would also have to ged rid of the feature that moves the cloudmap W->E also, celestia should somehow be convinced to reload the map if it changes. obviously, using...

Re: Mostly Harmless. a Celestia based simulator/game
man! just what I was waiting for. I may even get off me butt and contribute - however, am I right in observing that the only file to download is a windows executable, right now? where is the source? and, more relevantly, how do you intend to wrap this thing around chris' source tree, I mean, do you ...

Re: Milky Way
... or some smart algorithm to switch rendering modes as required. there is no denying that detail density is by far highest around Sol. So wouldn't it make sense to use a pre-rendered image of the milky way (or even the fixed stars) for positions, say, of less than a few 100 AU from Sol? of course ...
