Re: How Do Galaxies Form?
The shape and probably also alot of other properties of the galaxies are influenced by collisions with other galaxies. While stars lie extremely far apart relative to their sizes, galaxies lie very close, as can be seen in Celestia

Re: Can someone answer a question for me
Actually, there is not absolute vacuum even in space. The closest you get is the vast emptyness between galaxy clusters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum As for the first question, one of the first injuries that occur with people or animals subjected to vaccum is that the nose freezes (!) This is...

The two are friends, I think that O'Neill guy has come with some input, but it is not excatly the same.
Although the atmosphere may be too tick, I still find it much more realistic looking than Celestia's. Reality is also visual.

my CFD gas gigant generator
I've tried to create a Matlab program that will simulate the appearance of a gas gitant, based on a simple 2D CFD algorithm. The only problem is that Matlab is too slow to generate a big, good looking picture, so the result is merely a 40*80 jpeg. And I'm still having some problems with the final re...

I must admit, though, this "bi-sexual deep sea animal" for $599 is quite a treat
hehe, that's the perfect description of that ugly blob. I can't imagine anyone seeing that thing in a shop window and saying "Oh gosh! Only 599$! I've got to get me one of those. It will match my shoes."

Imagine these graphics in Celestia...
I know, it is not perfectly realistic, but it's really, really good anyway, and it looks like a realtime version of Terragen... mixed with Celestia... The atmosperic effects are the best I've ever seen http://www.fl-tw.com/Infinity/infinity_media.php I think this engine has been brought to attention...

Re: how to calculate magnitudes?
He, he, I was just reading this post, and the first page reminded me of a Larson cartoon; A bunch of scientists are doing typical science stuff (conducting experiments and solving equations) when the ice-cream truck arrives, and total mayhem breaks out.

Re: New spiral galaxy types rendering
I love the new looks of the galaxies! Better visuals make Celestia so much more fun. And the depth sorting will make sideviews truly stunning. One thing though, is it possible to replace the blobs with custom bitmaps? (of low quality) That could make the galaxies more whispy and less blobby. Anyhow,...

I recently read that scientists hope to create microscopic black holes with the large hadron collider. Is that really safe? Do microscopic black holes evaporate immediately? Does anyone know? Prior to the first underwater a-bomb detonation scientists allegedly tried to determine the possibility of s...

Re: Gravity simulation software?
If you have access to Matlab, I can write one for you. I made a simple program with only two objects that worked fine, but I'd like to make a better one with more objects and a more accurate orbit solver

Re: You guys seeing this aurora?
I was in the military north of the polar circle, (near Troms?, Norway) and I saw the aurora about every second night, often many nights in a row. At the end, it was almost like "ach, there goes that annoying aurora again." Not much else to see up there except raindeer. You should try to watch the au...

Re: What would happen if...
Serious physicians/mathematicians have speculated that if you tried to do such a thing, some strange and unknown mechanism would interfer and prevent you from commiting the act. (Like in the movie "The Time Machine") Personally, and for no particular reason, I believe timetravel of that kind is impo...

Re: Titan flyby next week!
I see what you mean, but do the streaks need to be groves? It may be groves in subsurface ice/other material that shows through the liquid, or it might be melting material of a slightly different colour that is drifting away from the ice. I don't mean to quarrel, it is just so annying to give up the...

http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/jpegMod/PIA06138_modest.jpg How can you tell form these images that the dark feature isn't a ocean? I'm not saying that it is, but the picture is kind of blurry, and more important, why would an icecold hydrocarbon ocean have a coastline that exactly resembles that ...

Re: Titan flyby next week!
I wonder about that big dark feature. (Xanadu?) It looks like an ocean with some islands in it, but it is supposed to be a continent, isn't it? The edge looks very much like a coastline from a distance, but close up, the border isn't that sharp. Could the blurriness result from a sludgy substance, s...

cylindrical projection
Can anyone tell me or give me a link on how to get the appropriate "stretch" near the poles when creating a texture? And how do you make a nice and "seamless" texture without mirroring parts of the image? I use Photoshop.
