Tidally Locked worlds

Hello folks.
Does anyone have a formula or something for working out the correct rotation for a world to be tidally locked based on its distance from a star?

And please, be gentle. The mathmatical part of my brain was lost after a heavy night of excess four years ago!

Cheers

Gimp users and mercator projections

I've been using the wonderful image editor Gimp to create some nice surface textures. But around the polar regions I'm getting a nasty distortion , as shown here.......... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/lazarou/infinitepossibility.jpg Can anyone help with getting the proper projection so I d...

Re: Gateway 2 is coming and a few more tidbits...

Not sure exactly what you just said there (LOL) but if you mean the odd stretching of the asteroid texture thats because I misplaced the original Kleopatra jpg and had to make do with a Deimos instead.

Is it a bad sign when you recognise an asteroid from its shape :? !

Re: Double Planets

Thanks guys for the help! It was that final thing that did it. I wouldn't have thought one little space could be so important! Here's the proof of all your problem solving anyway. This is a hollowed out Asteroid caught in the barycenter between Ghandi and Shiantiag Xing, aptly called "Kashmir!" http...

Re: Double Planets

Well here is where it all starts to go pear shaped. This is the last habitat for Ghandi (which is fine) and the first for Shiantiag Xing (which is not fine) I can't for the life of me figure out where I've gone wrong ? :? "Koena Mitra Rock " "EPS Ind/barycenter/GHANDI" { Color [ 0.85 0.85 1.0 ] Clas...

Re: Double Planets

BTW does anyone know if there's some kind of limit to the amount of objects you can have in anyone system (apart from draining the memory) I'm putting a few space habitats and things around my two worlds yet it only seems to work with Ghandi not Shiantiag Xing  here's a pic of what i mean http:...

Renaming Stars

Hello , I'm messing about with fictional star systems and am using the star catalog addon provided by Pascal Hartmann but I'm sure the answer to my boggle goes for any stars.dat file for use in celestia. How do I rename stars not found in the "starnames.dat" file? I'm guessing the answer lies within...

Re: Upgrade advice

I've decided to slam some memory in whilst i ponder the card (512 mb) to be exact. For a while it worked, Celestia was moving faster than ...erm.....a very fast thing but today it came up with this error message "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)" Now heaven forbid windows s...

Re: Upgrade advice

A "mature" chipset....I love the euphemisms these techie folks use :) But yes it is struggling and standing in the way of my 3D plans so out with the old in with the new. I think i've found a Nvidia FX 5200 graphics card that you mentioned earlier for a very competitive price but before I click on O...

Re: Upgrade advice

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but;

Chip type: SiS 650 Rev 00
DAC Type: Internal
Memory Size: 32 MB (funny feels like a lot less!)
Video Memory Clock 133MHZ
Adapter String SiS Compatable VGA
Bios Information 1.01.00

Selden my god man, can you translate?

Re: Upgrade advice

Unfortunatly, the only documentation that came with my computer was a big sheet telling me where to plug the monitor in :x !

Is there a way i can tell what my PC can and can't hack by looking at the hardware profiles on windows XP or just having a nose around the thing?

Upgrade advice

I love to play about with celestia, inventing new star systems with pretty looking planets, space stations and exotic things but i find the program is too slow on my system I have a 1.8 ghz intel celeron processor 256mb DDR memory with windows Xp running on a nearly full 40gb hard drive. The graphic...

captured rotation and geosynchronos orbit

For example I have created a model of a gas siphoning space station to orbit a gas giant at a low altitude (marvellous view with a ringed planet!) but I want it to keep the business end of the thing pointed at the planet at all times. Also how do you find the geosynchronos orbit for any object, am I...

nightside textures on 3ds models

I hope this is the best place to ask this, I have just downloaded a few space station models and I wanted to add a nightside texture to them (portholes, navigation lights, etc) but I don't seem to be having any success. For example "Santiago Habitat" "SIG dra/Alrakis/Deigo Habitat" { Mesh "Borgspher...
