Re: Cassini's Iapetus encounter 2007
Iapetus is a truly strange and wonderful place, going by the images coming out of Ciclops. It's like a panda moon. http://ciclops.org/view_event.php?id=67 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/lostfisherman/celestitan/IAP3766_8632_1.jpg Why the dark regions should look as sharp as that I haven't th...

Re: Thethys 4k , download the 1k & 4k versions for testing
But the Odysseus crater (the big one on the left) is much more detailed in the Voyager data (medres/tethys.jpg) ... Out of interest it was only a few days after the new Cassini cylindrical maps were released that better raw images of the Odysseus crater region were available. http://saturn1.jpl.nas...

Re: What colour is Mimas?
I'm afraid my knowledge isn't complete, but I'll have a stab. The Voyager mission returned pictures of Mimas that were reddish in colour, along with the other icy Saturnian satellites. Voyager used, I think, combined colour filters of orange, green and the ultra violet. Cassini is using all sorts of...

You all should have seen this, but wow...

It' a false colour view showing composition, they apparently had to tone down the redness.

Re: [Cassini] Hyperion: What the heck?!
This shows the localised dark spot stuff a little more clearly; it's a bit like a bump map in places. http://saturn1.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/images/raw/raw-images-details.cfm?feiImageID=50175 At the bottom of the above image there are some strange elongated shapes likely the result of collapse, show...

Re: New Celestia-1.4.0pre-FT1 (galaxies) for Testing
In the new celestia from page 5, this is what i got. :( I got that too with the the 'page 5' version, the galaxy labels were enabled in that one, but not in FT1, as was said in the readme. This was with the new data file left in place. Of course the galaxies weren't drawn, just labeled. It could ne...

Re: New Celestia-1.4.0pre-FT1 (galaxies) for Testing
Hi, Perhaps you can help us to debug this one: what happens if you use the "latest CVS" celestia.exe file Selden posted (page 5) ? Hello Toti, The same thing happens, I lose vertex/Nvidia combiners; that is, no normal maps, no specular reflections and no atmospheric effects for Earth. Ctrl v behave...

Re: New Celestia-1.4.0pre-FT1 (galaxies) for Testing
Just to say I gave it what rough test I could last night. The galaxies render well, I can orient well with the mouse like any model, "a" and "s" travel speed keys give good animation, and the cores of galaxies brighten with increased distance (did I read that that was an intention?). It's a very nea...

They certainly won't use the commercially available CDs, they degrade beyond use in the normal sunlight through an Earth based window (mine, actually).

Re: I Suggest a revised definition of "planet"...
Good to see Wiki on the ball with this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definition_of_planet It's interesting to read that the classification of planets isn't a new controversy, Ceres was for a short time considered a planet. My own limited thoughts on this are that more of these objects will be discov...

Yeah, I've been looking at some of the raw images this afternoon, I didn't expect Enceladus to look so, er, crazy. Re: Celestia preview of Titan Flyby on Feb 15
I took the opportunity today to tidy up my copy of celestia and install and look at a good few addons properly, two of which are t00fris new coloured Titan and Jestrs Cassini. They are both very good and I've had a pleasant evening with them. It's all the excuse I need to put up some nice screen-sho...
