I concur. I have found it takes no more than a few minutes on my clunky old beast of a laptop! It's a matter of knowing when to pull the plug on the process.

Re: Gaseous Giganticus
You can adjust number of bands, the scale and the velocity of those to achieve different looks. It isn't exactly "the same seed." You do have a measure of control over it.
BTW, your gas giant textures look very nice, but I especially like the third one.

Re: Gas Giants
Gorgeous work! Been trying to bring my gas giants more in line with what they've got going on over at Orion's Arm. Having everything look like Jupiter or Saturn makes for uninspiring art. Thank you for being different!
And thank you, smcameron!

Re: Gas Giants
Many thanks! I've been doing more work lately on my terrestrial worlds, so now I'll have to get back to the gas giants!

Re: StarGen Sources
I think I might have the version Selden and someone else had done. Originally ran them on Windows XP courtesy of Cygwin, but since switching to Ubuntu, wouldn't mind figuring out how to get them up and running again.

More Gas Giants
Been on a little bit of a gas giant making binge...courtesy of gaseous-giganticus. I have found that one of the tricks to using it is to stop the process early in for more realistic-looking turbulence/clouds/whorls, etc. One might need to do a little post processing in GIMP or Photo$hop, but in trut...

Re: Pictures from Celestia
Same system as the previous gas giant I posted. The second gas giant in the system, although it could be viewed as an ice-giant, though more massive than Neptune (19 EM). Texture was also done with gaseous-giganticus, with some post work in GIMP. Enjoy.

Re: Pictures from Celestia
The rings I made on my own. Probably will make them a little less opaque. Sorry about not including a haze. As far as the GG texture; I had one originally for this planet, but it got deleted. HOWEVER, I still had a picture of it in a planetary line-up for a related art/book project. So, using GIMP, ...

From a hypothetical gas giant from a system I'm (slowly) working on...The texture comes from gaseous-giganticus.

Earthlike in Blender
After much searching, I was able to find a tutorial for making heightfields in Blender. Using that information, as well as inspiration from JVV, and several nice mapping gradients in GIMP, I have this....

Re: Earth Like for 7.30.22
Not too far off from what I had guessed. I figured GIMP would come to the party at some point. I had started documenting the process partly so that I had reference to go back to. So far I have several different ways of making Earthlike planets...I'm a hoarder of knowledge! I am probably slower in th...

Re: Earth Like for 7.30.22
Been learning how to do these in blender too. But, I like to do some extra work and go into sculpt mode and alter my mountain ranges. Then I take it to Wilbur and GIMP for heightfields and coloring.
I do have a question, how do you make yours seamless? Thanks!

Re: Online tools to convert cubemaps to panoramas
There was an online program I was using, but it required very careful attention to the upload order, and it sometimes didn't interpolate the information, i.e., I would have thin white lines where each piece joined. Admittedly, learning the command line is terrifying at first, but if I can do it, any...

Re: Gas Giants
Well, it's well and good. Personally, I'll start with a 200 x 1200 multicolored strip and go from there. Recently I used a piece of rhodonite and a photo of watermelon rind. (Why? Because, that's why!) I will find myself trying multiple versions of an original file to see what I can get. So far, I l...

Re: Gas Giants
I hope I don't get accused of necroposting, but I have a couple questions about the process of gaseous-giganticus and cubic2erect. Firstly, I've getting the command-line thing sorted out. Using the cubic2erect command in the terminal is WAAAAAAAAAAY easier than the GUI. The Hugin program was confusi...

Re: how to make realistic cloud textures
To a certain extent, Photo$hop tutorials can be used in GIMP and vice-versa...it might just take a few extra minutes and steps to figure out what is what in each program.

I took the liberty of putting a bump map on one of the moons. I hope you don't mind. It was done in Wilbur.

Re: Trolligi's old addons
Good ideas for first add-ons! Alien worlds that look alien! Adding bump/normal maps will help improve the look, and over time, you may want to improve the overall textures. But otherwise, they don't look too bad. I like the idea of brown dwarf systems. -M- Oh, and I did have to change the folders to...
