Re: Post your Celestia pictures!

I quite like this image, illustrating two of Jupiter's moons against a backdrop of the Jovian clouds http://eg.orionsarm.com/xcms.php?r=oaeg-view-article&egart_uid=4682fa17952e0 I based it on this image http://wanderingspace.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/io-on-jupiter.jpg which some of you migh...

Re: Observatories from old civilisations

There have been some theories about Stonehenge being a calendar, yes, particularly those put forward by Gerald Hawkins; but nothing can be proven at this late stage. Similarly it seems very likely, even inevitable, that Stonehenge was used as a ritual centre; but what those rituals were, how often t...

Re: Observatories from old civilisations

Nice list of antiquities, Cham, but it might not be archaologically accurate to call some of these sites 'observatories' . The truth is, we don't know what some of them were used for. Stonehenge in particular is a complete mystery.

Re: Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

Could I ask how to calculate Orientation and Rotation Offset for any particular LongLat declaration? I'm sure it's described somewhere, but I must have missed it.

That was such a lovely picture I thought I'd see what it looked like as a texture.
Not too bad; looks like some of the more extreme simulations of atmosphere rotation I've seen here and there on the 'net...

Re: Waskn'Narax, the 2nd Earth

Welcome to Celestia, coen ! I am very impressed with your work on Furaha, and hope you find Celestia useful. Since you have a very good map of Furaha already, you would probably find some difficulty using pieces of the Blue Marble texture to represent your world. Perhaps you could try using a good E...

Here's a close relative of humanity that has patches of bright blue skin so I suspect that a wholly blue humanoid is not impossible

Re: Its a bird! It's a plane! No, it's SuperEarth!

I have described a 10 Earth-mass rocky planet here http://www.orionsarm.com/worlds/Sisyphos.html it is a Chthonian type planet, which used to have a thick gas giant atmosphere but lost it because of heating by the star and by interactions with the stellar wind. The gravity on such a world would be 2...

Re: Its a bird! It's a plane! No, it's SuperEarth!

First we need to know what you mean by twice the 'size'. Do you mean twice the mass, or twice the radius? I think we could probably work something out for either case.

Andor is a nice water gas giant texture; the rest are nice too, but I do like that one.

If there were a phenomenon which consistently removed advanced civilisations, such as a commonly repeated experiment in physics which all civilisations eventually attempt (unlikely in itself, I think), or perhaps a particularly unavoidable form of destructive warfare, then that phenomenon might be e...

Re: getting correct scale for models made in other programs

Note that Celestia defines the radius of an object, not the length; so if you are making a spacecraft 100 metres long you need to give the object a radius of 50 metres in the .ssc file (if that is what you are using). This measurement assumes that the spacecraft is a sphere- so an irregular shaped c...

Perhaps this is the Great Filter that Dr Bostrom talks about.
Every civilisation advances this far and disappears in a puff of smoke.

Re: A Stellar Explosion You Could See on Earth!

This is incredible- read this post from the Bautforum... http://www.bautforum.com/1224591-post14.html GRB 080319B certainly is the brightest explosion ever seen, not counting the galaxy nuclei (Bloom, et al., 2008; D'elia, et al., 2008; Dado, Dar & De Rujula, 2008). With a redshift 0.937, the GR...

Re: Plants on other worlds may be a different color than green.

Most of the plants which use different coloured photosynthetic pigments and antenna pigments live underwater, where the wavelengths and the intensity of the available light is quite different. Note that in that paper the authors note that good protection from UV light can be obtained by living at ce...

I have had a little time to test your add-on, Anders, (thanks for that) and although I like the appearance of the cmod travel routes, they do slow my computer down considerably. I would recommend using asterisms for the same purpose- note that they need not be exlusive of each other, and you could s...

Another thing I have been adding recently to my worlds is shallow water in the coastal regions, which is lighter in colour than deep ocean seawater. Estuaries, bays, and shallow inland seas should have slightly lighter colour water than elsewhere.

Re: Waskn'Narax, the 2nd Earth

I often do not include deserts on my terraformed worlds, because I expect that on an artificailly earth-like world, weather management systems would be sophisticated enough to distribute moisture around as required. Of course if the inhabitants like deserts that is a different story... On the other ...
