Re: Infinte kinetic energy
My two cents, please feel free to ignore it... Not everyone is an expert on astronomy or physics, and insulting noobs doesn't really present the community in such a great light... One can correct and teach without being rude about it... try something more like "Actually, that's not quite correct, le...

Top three starships
What are your favorite starships from any science-fiction TV or movie?
1. Andromeda Ascendent (Andromeda)
2. Taelon Mothership (Earth: Final Conflict)
3. USS Voyager (Star Trek: Voyager)

Ah, one of the coolest ships ever made in sci-fi, in one of the cooler universes as well.

Re: THE FIVE SUNS, Aztec Legend
This is el conejo de dientes grandes and it drinks your blood, you see. It drinks so much that you start losing consciousness and as you grey out you start seeing evil rabbits of doom coming down at you from the moon... and from the volcanoes I guess...

What surprises me is that anyone would even leave a forum open for posting to non-registered to begin with, anymore...

Celestia desktop overlay?
Dunno if anyone has thought of this or done it, but I think a desktop overlay add-on (to get Celestia to "shine through" desktop or a specified screen color like you can do with Winamp's Advanced Visualization Suite) would rock.
If anyone has made one, please show me where I can get it.

Re: South pole stars
Hm. There's an interesting question... I think what you would do is draw a circle the same as the north pole circle but orient it in the other direction in RA?
There has to be some south pole stars more obvious than the current one...

Re: I have a few questions...
Yes and yes for the first one. Lemme do the math for the other... No. It comes out to like 1.5. You divide by the square of the distance in AU. Note, however, that a larger proportion of the planet's radiation is in UV and such nasties... not sure but I'm not thinking it's habitable worth a damn no ...

Including myself, yes; no disrespect intended. Please forgive my wording.
"Weird shit" not not imply "false" in my lexicon. I'm just still trying to puzzle it all out.

Re: Help? Trapezium Stars add-on not working.
Hah. Seems strange that if you have multiple data points with both methods that you get results that are very far off the mark... maybe if there's a cloud of gunk in the way that would skew the luminosity mark, but seems that's so obvious that it can't be that easy. I heard of the discrepancy but I'...

Re: Help? Trapezium Stars add-on not working.
It's been a long time since I've actually used astro calculations to, say, find distances based on luminosity and estimations of extinction, but I am aware that I've come up with some answers that Hipparcos didn't exactly agree with... My calculations for Tarazed, for example, ranged from 200 to 300...

Yes, that explains it. Thank you. Thus the errors may be so significant that the parallax measurement may be totally useless, I'm guessing?
