Re: Ideas for next version of Celestia
For those interested in an 'orbit' mode, I think there's already a gravity effects addon for celestia that will do what you're looking for (search the previous threads for the topic). One other thing I'd like to see is a seperate 'show orbit' option for planets, moons, asteroids/comets, and spacecra...

Re: Earth weather satellites
Putting my time to more efficient use this time, I read some online Perl tutorials (I love the internet!) and wrote a script to convert a NORAD TLE file (you can download these from www.celestrak.com) into Celestia's .ssc file format. You can download the Perl script here: http://www.skullcave.com/t...

Re: Earth satellites and comets
Wow, that saves me a lot of work then!
Did you create a script to automatically generate the ssc files from the NORAD data or type them out manually?

The julian day for that epoch is 2452473.46484545. I use the converter at:

Here's another 62 satellites in polar orbit:

Space around our little planet is getting pretty busy and I've still got 2400 more satellites to go!![Surprised :o](./images/smilies/icon_surprised.gif)

Re: How do I instal Celestia ?
Well you could just double-click the exe file, that's the easiest way to install it. For future reference, the run option is located near the bottom of the start menu, above the shutdown/restart option. (I think that's where it is at least, I haven't used windows for a while). ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Earth weather satellites
Just finished putting together a ssc file with orbital data for 37 weather satellites in geosynch or polar orbit around Earth. Download the file from here: http://www.skullcave.com/weathersats.ssc and add it to your celestia extras directory. There's no models or albedo set for them so you can only ...

Re: Ideas for next version of Celestia
I would to see a feature whereby you could place objects on the surface of a planet or moon via a ssc file. ie: "USN Enterprise" "Sol/Earth" { ObjectMesh "cvnenterprise.3ds" Position 92*43'15" 86*06'57" #latitude & longitude in D/M/S. Displacement -8.3 #vertical displacement in meters }

Feel free to, it's there for anyone who wants it.
I wish there was a more detailed texture for it since it looks like a really interesting landscape.

Re: Highest res Earth texture?
Also, what are the highest res night and cloud maps? For some reason there is no discernable difference in cloud quality above 2048x1024 pixels. As for the night side texture, I have a 32x16k one (too big for me to even use) made from a GIF at NASA's Visible Earth website, that's the biggest one I ...

Re: Newbie & textures, help please
Hi Malcolm, congratulations on installing your first add-on planet! As for the problems you mentioned, bumpmaps only work when you have a bumpmap file specified in the ssc file (look at the Moon section in solarsys.ssc) and pixel shaders turned on (press CTRL P in celestia, using Mercury to see if i...

Re: texture problem...
They are not loading because the texture dimensions need to be a power of 2. Currently Ariel.jpg is 1440x720 pixels, you need to resize it to 1024x512 pixels. That's the only thing causing the problem. Good luck!

So then the problem must lie in one of the last three things one would believe. But what does a sound card have to do with Gimp. The video card isn't used for the crunching of the textures. Thats done by the proccesor and the ram and the hard drive. I've had similar problems with lock-ups when I us...

Re: Highest res Earth texture?
And of course, there's the huge Blue Marble textures going up to 200k by 100k or something, with 1km/pixel... Though I doubt that would work well in Celestia You could make a 32x16k texture from this and compress it with DXT1, I think it would be 340MB or 450MB with a specular mask if my math is co...

Re: Ideas for next version of Celestia
There may already be a way of doing this that I've missed but I'd like to see a .celestia config file so I don't have to reset the various options I like each time I run celestia (show clouds, stars as points etc).
