Re: Galaxy zoo project blog

Is it me or do they look fuzzy? Maybe i have been sitting in front of my HD screen too long. Still it would be cool to see a 2k image of a galaxy in crystal clear detail. I know that there are some images out there that look like they 2k, but those are usually unscaled, and doctored.

Re: Astronomers name dwarf planets after Pluto!!!

Its of course not confirmed but they are starting to think that certain perturbations in the ort cloud could be do to a planet with a mass of 0.30 to 0.70 of Earth's mass. This means a planet possibly the size of Mars to 3/4 the size of Earth. If in fact they find this ort cloud giant are they goin...

Re: Astronomers name dwarf planets after Pluto!!!

Its sad to think that the bulk if not all of this stems from Pluto was demoted from [full] planetary status. I don't necessarily agree with the IAU definition because it rules out some more of the strange phenomenon like a binary planet pair [two planets orbiting a common center of gravity which orb...

A star is born.

I have been looking around for some specific information on star formation during the final stages. When a star ignites it pushes away all the gasses that were in the process of forming the star. If this is correct then what else happens to distinguish between a Red Dwarf and a Blue Giant. The ignit...

Re: Wow! New Forums!

Nice, I like the new PHPBB 3. But whats throwing me still off, is that now the usernames are on the right side. On the left hand side would be better, IMHO. But otherwise, it seems quite nice. I agree, I run my own forum, which still uses PHPBB2, and the other day I was thinking about upgrading to ...

Well this is a surprise. I am glad the site was upgraded. everyone should enjoy the added flexibility that phpbb3 offers. Not to pimp my own style, but you might want to add this template for thoes who have wide screen monitors. http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=669085&st=0...

Re: 'Death Star' Gamma-Ray Gun Pointed Straight at Earth

The problem is not so much distance, but the focus of high intensity particles. Because WR104?€™s pole if more or less facing us, most of the energy will be directed towards us, that is what would make that particular supernova so dangerous. Also Betelgeuse does not pose the same type of problem. Be...

Re: Gas giants colliding?

When the original video came out there was a lot of skepticisms on what would happen. It was originally from a Japanese's show. I think It might be overblown, but then again the visual size is way to large for what was stated.

Fox News is a notoriously poor news source . . . Here's Peter Tuthill's paper on WR 104: http://arxiv.org/pdf/0712.2111v1 And the Bad Astronomer as a nice summary: http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2008/03/03/wr-104-a-nearby-gamma-ray-burst/ --Chris After reading both the paper and the Bad Astrono...

'Death Star' Gamma-Ray Gun Pointed Straight at Earth

Eight years ago, WR104 was discovered in the constellation Sagittarius by Sydney University astronomer Peter Tuthill. A Wolf-Rayet star is the last step on the way to a supernova ?€” the explosion of a star at the end of its life. Images from the Mauna Kea in Hawaii telescope show that every eight ...

Most of the rest of the world has a higher female to mail ratio, mainly because female test to live longer, not because their are more female births. Birth rate world wide tend to be 50/50. What does this say about the Heisenberg uncertainty principle? As a little humor... Dr. Egon Spengler: There's something very important I forgot to tell you. Dr. Peter Venkman: What? Dr. Egon Spengler: Don't cross the streams. Dr. Peter Venkman: Why? Dr. Egon Spengler: It would be bad. Dr. Peter Ven...

I don't think what you are asking is physically possible, but it if was it would still look white like clouds. it does not matter if the drops a a foot in diameter, scaling back the light would still be refracted just like the smaller drops in clouds now.

I would like to refine my original statement a bit Unfortunately The way things will go is more like something like this. The laws of supply and demand will keep the population down in those countries that believe in the capitalistic society. Those that tend to lean more socialist will create laws t...
