Forgive the Dumb Question Please

But what exactly does the asterisms.dat file do? I've seen messages describing how a new asterisms.dat file is available, but I'm at a loss to know why this is important. Have tried to scan all the documentation I have, but with not much luck. Can someone explain this file to me please? Thanks, Bob

wtimmins,

I'll bite... :)

What the heck is a flare star? I don't see why it can't be done, but I'm afraid that I just don't know what your'e talking about?

Can you elaborate please for us rookies to space terminology?

Thanks, Bob

Re: A couple of new (to me) bugs for you...

It's gotta make you wonder though... What do you supose THEY'RE assessment of the perceived bug will be? :) At any rate, thanks again. I'd like to create an SSC to explore some of the locations on Mars. This may take me a while, however. I ain't much on latitudes, longitudes, etc... I'll give it a s...

Re: Another Feature Request

Selden, I'm running Celestia in a maximized Window on my XP. It's just the stars in the entire field of view that change, NOT the PC's graphics. It's related only to the Celestia display. More information... I can only use the "Basic" or the "MultiTextured" OpenGL information because I don't have a ...

Re: Another Feature Request

Selden, I *did* manage to re-create the problem after I logged off of the net last time. The following image is what you're SUPPOSED to see while viewing M4. http://www.home.earthlink.net/~bobhegwood/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/good.jpg Next, is what happens AFTER I try to right-click and...

Re: Another Feature Request

Selden, My display color quality setting is maximized for my machine at 24-bits. Interestingly, when I just tried to reproduce the error so that I could show it to you, I couldn't get it to happen again. If it does, I'll save some pictures for you. This really was weird though. First the entire clus...

Re: A couple of new (to me) bugs for you...

Don and Grant... I made a cardinal mistake... I assumed that the author knew what he was doing. The author is nameless, but the source (I thought) was impeccable. See: http://exp.arc.nasa.gov/downloads/celestia/extras/ This is where I got the earth_phys.ssc locations file from. Sheesh! If ya can't t...

Re: A couple of new (to me) bugs for you...

Not true, Mr. G, Sir... The earth_phys.ssc file has defined the locations as VARIOUS types. Or, are you saying that the WAY in which they are defined as types is incorrect? See below for examples: Location " Rocky Mountains " "Sol/Earth" { LongLat [ -110 45 0] Size 10 Import...

Re: Another Feature Request

Don, You and Selden have my complete and utter attention in all topics from now on... I simply set the field of view to 35 in my "start.cel", and "voila" - 800x600 resolution display. (Almost) :) How'd you guys get to be so smart, eh? Never mind... (I know... It's probably just from answering dumb q...

Re: From manual: How can I experience ....

LarsS... The Black Hole, the Pulsar and a whole host of other addons can be had from Celestia websites all around the world. Simply use a search engine to locate terms like "Celestia Black Hole" or Celestia Pulsar" in order to find the goodies. I have over 50 different addons installed on my machine...

Thanks AGAIN Don...

I *think* I'll use your suggested method. Looks much easier to me. 8O

PS - Don't I owe YOU a drink now too? You've certainly helped me as much as Selden has and I DEFINITELY owe him one.

Re: bugs

Could it be that his rings textures are simply at a resolution which is to LARGE for the OpenGL driver? Mr. Higgins and Mr. Ball managed to help me get through THIS problem at last... Seems that Celestia 1.3.0 WILL allow the used of oversized grahics textures, no matter what your OpenGL says. Celest...

Re: problems with the installation

My thoughts for what it's worth... I also had a problem with the Black Hole Addon... Even though everything was set up correctly, the black hole displayed was simply a grey, featureless disk. The fix? As Tech Sgt. Chen and I have discovered, some graphics files simply need to be loaded and re-saved ...

Re: A couple of new (to me) bugs for you...

Thanks again Don and Grant...

I simply thought that this was a bug in Celestia, but you're telling me it's still under construction?

No problem, I'll play with it a while.

Take care guys, Bob

Jack and Guest...

I HAVE re-downloaded the program, and I'm much happier with it now. I seem to be discovering a number of bugs, but I've managed to overcome most of them.

Thanks for the advice.

Re: Another Feature Request

I appreciate that input Marc, but I can't use it, since I get an error message and Celestia just will not work after I try to change the display mode. The error says something like "Unable to change while in Windows Mode" or some such. Then the system is screwed until I press CTRL-ALT-DELETE in orde...

A couple of new (to me) bugs for you...

Hello again... More Gristle for the Mill... 1) I've discovered that locations don't seem to be working correctly. In order to view the locations on the Moon or the Earth, for example, you have to select not cities, not maria, not terrae, not any of the selections except "Other Features." Even though...
